In the Korean language, South Korea is called Daehan Min-guk (Korean:???? listen (help·info), Hanja:????, literally "Great Han People's Nation"), or Hanguk for short (??, "Han Nation", usually referring to Korea as a whole) or Namhan (??, "South Han", referring to South Korea specifically). North Koreans refer to the South as Namjoson (???, "South Choson"). The name Han dates back to the ancient Samhan Confederacies of the Proto-Three Kingdoms era of Korea.
